Water Issues in the NorthState
Ecotopia 814: October 28, 2025
Our guests in the studio were Emily McCabe and Susan Schrader.
Emily grew up in Durham, studied Society and Environment at UC Berkeley, interned for environmental nonprofits in college, and is now a California Climate Action Corps fellow at the Butte Environmental Council.
Susan is a local domestic well user and environmentalist who is monitoring activities in our region due to the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (including the newly formed Tuscan Water District). She has become engaged because she realizes that everything in our community relies on groundwater.
In an extensive interview, they reviewed the nature of aquifers generally and the Tuscan aquifer specifically, including its subbasins. They discussed the California Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA) and the Vina subbasin GSA and its work. In the final segment of the interview, they presented their view of issues concerning stakeholder representation on the GSA, and attempts to stack the GSA with people partial to agriculture, which already sucks up 90% of the water in the basin. They also presented ways interested citizens can get involved.
